"SESEY
helped me to understand what an engineer really does and decide if that
is what I want to do for a career."
Erin
Jensen, 11 grader, Salem
|
WHO
SESEY targets high school girls and minorities who are traditionally under-represented
in science and engineering, although others may apply. Students must have
completed their freshman, sophomore or junior year in high school and have
an interest in math and science (see PAST PARTICIPANTS).
In addition, high school science teachers may apply to participate in a
concurrent program for development of classroom science and engineering
modules. |
WHAT
Students spend a week (see The SESEY WEEK) with a
research group in either the Department of Chemical Engineering or Bioengineering
at Oregon State University. Each student works with a faculty member and
college student mentors on a week-long project (see PROJECTS).
The program also includes a trip to the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center,
computer instruction and evening recreational programs (see sample SCHEDULE). |
"The
SESEY program was great for me because it gave me first-hand experience
with engineering while providing an opportunity to sample OSU's academic
program and campus life."

"SESEY
not only provided me with a realistic experience in scientific research,
but also uncovered interesting career options I never knew existed. I
left the program with a sense of accomplishment and a better understanding
of the road ahead."
Jamie Bergen,
10th grade, Corvallis
|
WHERE
Students live in university housing during the week of the program and utilize
the university cafeteria for meals. The Engineering Department's state-of-the-art
computer lab and Dixon Recreational Center are also available to SESEY students.
The program offers high school students an excellent opportunity to sample
life on a university campus! |
WHEN: July 13-18, 2008
HOW MUCH?
The program fee of $150 per student includes room and board. Assistance,
including full and partial scholarships, will be available upon request.
Assistance is awarded based on need. For more information contact Dr.
